The 2025 Disaster Diary is a week-by-week record of a selection of extreme weather events driven by climate breakdown over the 12 months of 2025.
Extreme weather events are nothing new, but the frequency and severity at which they are now happening is. This is not a natural cycle, it is hard evidence of climate breakdown.

28.12 Spain – One dead, two missing in southern Spain as torrential rains cause flash floods. Overflowing riverbeds swept away cars and motorcycles and authorities warned residents to stay indoors
25.15 Iran – December rains that many residents hoped would bring relief quickly became catastrophic. Heavy rainfall and floods across Iran followed weeks of dryness, then arrived in force, bringing waterlogging, flash floods, and severe disruptions across multiple provinces.
25.12 USA – Seattle – Record-breaking flooding has led to continuous monitoring of critical levees in the area, including the White, Green, and Cedar River levees.
24.12 Iceland – hottest christmas eve ever as temperatures soar to an unprecedented 19.8°C. The average December temperatures typically range between -1°C and 4°C making this Christmas Eve reading nearly 16 degrees above the seasonal norm.
23.12 USA – Washington state officials warn of toilet rats after floods. Washington state has been dealing with some of its worst ever flooding this month which can “sweep rodents into the sewer systems”. Rats are surprisingly strong swimmers and can hold their breath for several minutes, meaning that, along with their tenacity and ability to squeeze into small spaces, they can easily enter someone’s home via the toilet.
21.12 Argentina – intense thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds triggered flooding in parts of Paraguay. In Corrientes province, Argentina, at least 270 people were evacuated from the capital.

15.12 Bolivia – Santa Cruz region floods after days of heavy rainfall have claimed at least 20 lives, with dozens more missing, around 2,100 families are affected with hundreds without shelter.
12.12 USA – Historic floods have washed away homes and stranded families in Washington state. “I understand that many in our state have experienced significant floods in the past, however, we’re looking at a historic situation.”
12.12 Sumatra – Fears grow that world’s rarest apes were swept away in Sumatran floods. The destroyed areas would have contained some 35 orangutans, and considering the violence of the destruction it wouldn’t surprise us if they are all dead”
11.12 Brazil – About 1.5 million homes and businesses were without electricity after an cyclone swept through Sao Paulo toppling trees and power lines, disrupting flights and the water supply. Damaging wind storms also caused vast power outages in 2023 and 2024.
10.12 Kenya – communities across 23 counties are now facing acute food and water shortages.
10.10 Turkey – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has documented 684 sinkholes offering the most comprehensive picture to date of how climate change is reshaping the Konya Closed Basin. All recorded sinkholes lie in rural or agricultural areas
09.12 Saudi Arabia – Jeddah. One of the heaviest rainfalls in the cities history (equivalent of annual rainfall in a few hours) causes chaos
09.12 Iraq – At least two people have died in severe flooding in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Only the most recent of severe weather disasters in recent years, including record summer temperatures exceeding 50°C, sand and dust storms. Desertification is also affecting 39 per cent of the country, while 54 per cent of its agricultural land has been degraded, mainly due to soil salinity caused by low water levels in rivers, a lack of rain and rising sea levels.
08.12 Indonesia – Sumatra death toll rises to 908 with 410 individuals still missing following cyclone-induced deluges. Environmental groups attribute the amplified damage from the floods to widespread deforestation linked to mining and logging
07.12 Sri Lanka – Uodate. Death toll has risen to 618, while other parts of Asia continue to grapple with the scale of the destruction and mounting casualties that have exceeded 1,800.
06.12 Libya – Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across multiple cities = Tripoli, Al-Zawiya, Tarhuna, and Misrata. Disruptions included the closure of main roads, suspension of school classes, and the evacuation of patients from a flooded hospital.
06.12 Australia – NSW’s first heatwave of the summer, extreme fire danger forecast across the state after a weekend of blazes which destroyed at least 20 homes. Penrith expected to hit 41 degrees and 39 degrees forecast in Sydney .
05.12 South East Asia – UNICEF report that since late November this year, more than 4.1 million children in the region have had their education disrupted due to devastating climate-related disasters
05.12 Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur once again inundated by flash floods as heavy rainfall overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. While mitigation projects, including upgrades to retention ponds and pumping systems, have been implemented, repeated floods get worse.
05.12 Greece – Severe weather system “Byron” battered the county with torrential rain, flash floods, and thunderstorms, killing at least two people and paralyzing the capital with widespread disruptions that forced authorities to close all schools in the Attica region
04.12 Congo – Exceptional rainfall triggered severe flooding in Brazzaville and PointeNoire, around 50,000 people affected, 22,842 evacuated and 55 injured, according to the Congolese Red Cross. Thousands of homes partially or completely destroyed, road links damaged, and thousands of families have been left without shelter or means of subsistence
02.12 Argentina – La Rioja A powerful storm with heavy rain, strong winds, and hail struck the province. Approximately 110 mm of rain fell in a very short time, causing severe flooding and damage. Residential buildings in the city centre and rural areas were flooded; hail and strong winds damaged roofs, windows, and cars; downed power lines and fallen trees caused power outages.
01.12 Peru – At least 12 people, including three children, died Monday when a landslide sank two boats docked at a river port in central Peru, with dozens of others missing, officials said. The landslide was caused by “erosion” of the bank of the Ucayali River by repeated heavy rainfall.

30.11 Sri Lanka – Death toll from Sri Lanka floods, landslides rises to 334. It is the worst natural disaster to hit the island in two decades, officials said the extent of damage in the worst-affected central region was only just being revealed
29.11 Indonesia – The death toll from flooding and landslides on Sumatra island has risen dramatically to 442
28.11 Tahiti – Authorities have retrieved a total of eight bodies that were buried following a major landslide. Search operations had to stop due to more landslides and collapse of portions of the mountain soaked by huge amounts of water accumulated, following days of torrential rains.
28.11 Jamaica – One month after Hurricane Melissa, people continue to report significant psychological impacts, including high levels of stress, anxiety, persistent fear, sleep disturbances, and grief linked to the loss of homes, livelihoods, and loved ones reports the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
26.11 Australia – Giant hailstones battered Australia’s east coast as a powerful spring storm swept through Queensland, leaving about 95,000 homes without power. The Bureau of Meteorology said Brisbane recorded hailstones as large as 14cm overnight that damaged cars, roofs and solar panels as the storm system caused 100kph winds and over 800,000 lightning strikes.
25.11 Thailand – A “once in 300 year” storm has battered southern Thailand, bringing floodwaters more than eight feet high that in one city cut off access to a maternity ward holding 30 newborn babies
24.11 France as many as a fifth of independent winegrowers may be forced to shut after some of the worst harvests in seventy years
21.11 Greece – Extreme weather hits : Over 360 emergency calls as storms batter Ionian Islands and Epirus
20.11 Vietnam – Vietnam floods kill 41 as record rain sweeps away bridge, leaves families stranded on rooftops. The deluge has submerged more than 52,000 homes and left half a million households and businesses without power. Rainfall has exceeded 1.5m (5ft) in several areas over the past three days.
20.11 Montenegro – intense rainfall has led to significant flooding in the coastal town of Budva. The Grđevice river, unable to contain the sudden influx of water, overflowed its banks, resulting in the sweeping away of several vehicles that were parked in its dry riverbed.
18.11 Italy – Two people have died in northern Italy after a mudslide cascaded through a town and turned roads into rivers.
16.11 USA – California is grappling with a dual environmental crisis, as a fast-moving wildfire rages near the Nevada border while successive storms threaten Los Angeles. A new blaze erupted on Thursday and by Friday, had consumed around 3,400 acres (1,375 hectares), according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).
